THE SKIN.
The skin, or skin, is our outermost covering and we can identify it as our protective coat. Specifically, in humans it is the largest organ, with a surface area of about 2m2, and has the function of protecting the underlying tissues, such as muscles, bones, and internal organs. It consists of two structures: the epidermis and the dermis.
Its structure
The epidermis is the outermost layer of the skin; it is not vascularized and its nourishment is by diffusion of metabolites and oxygen from the most superficial layer of the dermis. It consists of several layers of cells called keratinocytes, and the last layer, the most superficial layer that we can touch, consists of dead keratinocytes, which form what is known as keratin.
Beneath the epidermis is the dermis, which is the last, deepest layer of the skin. It consists of connective tissue, is vascularized and rich in collagen and elastin fibers, which are capable of giving the structure excellent elasticity and strength.
The integrity of this structure can be easily compromised by numerous factors both external and internal, by age and related diseases, and healing can often be long and difficult, or never occur.
